I think it’s useful to look at markets through the lens of evolution. In a healthy (competitive) market the market selects for companies that produce the highest quality product at the lowest possible price. In an unhealthy market, the businesses control the market and select for lower quality products at higher prices (getting more for less).

It’s the governments job to make sure that the apex predators in the economic ecosystem don’t over-hunt their prey to extinction. At the same time, we also want to be selecting for higher quality businesses to survive and reproduce and shouldn’t encourage the propagation of weak and unfit businesses to survive. In short, finding this sweat spot is a hell of a balancing act.
